By the end of this article, you’ll know exactly what photos to use.
So you can get more matches and more dates.
Let’s jump in with our panel of experts.
According to author and dating expert, Julia Spira:
Both men and women are visual.
That means having the best photos for your online dating profile is crucial.
Women make a split-second decision on:
Whether to swipe left or right.
Reply to a message they’ve received on a dating app.
To start, you’ll need a great primary close-up.
One where you’re smiling, seem happy, and approachable.
With a photo that isn’t a selfie or a blurry shot taken from your camera roll.
If you can’t afford to get professional photos taken, no worries.
That grabs a friend with a great digital camera or mobile phone.
The goal is to snap 100 photos in 4-5 outfits.
You’re bound to find one or more photos worth adding to your dating profile.
The Best Photos for Guys
The best recipe includes:
A full-length body shot.
An activity shot: such as taking a hike, playing golf, vacation photos.
You are doing something that you enjoy and a mix of indoor and outdoor photos.
Since you’re marketing yourself for love instead of a job:
Try to avoid the serious headshot that appears on your Linkedin profiles.
Remember that you’re only as attractive as your worst photo.
So if one doesn’t stand out from the rest of the shots, don’t include it in your dating profile.
There’s a reason that a picture tells 1000 words.
So remember to caption your photos with the location and year they were taken.
That way, she knows how recently they were taken.
How Many Photos for Your Profile?
For a dating site, I recommend posting 5-7 photos.
If you post too many photos, an “overload” reaction can occur.
Where someone feels they’ve seen your whole life story.
A dating profile is intended to pique the curiosity of someone viewing it.
So a glimpse into your life becomes intriguing.
Instead of seeing your entire life story, which can be overwhelming.
According to Tinder Headshot’s Photographer Max Shwartz:
I try my best to highlight what people look like their truest selves.
But under the best light possible.
It’s vital to look exactly like they would in person.
In the warmest and most approachable way possible.
If you work with a photographer or friend:
It will be important for them to get to know you.
That way, you’ll look comfortable and not look too stiff in your portraits.
This is a necessary ingredient for your online dating photos.
I recommend smiling as it comes off as more genuine and more likable as well.
But you should still have a variety - some smiling and some not.
That way, you have some choices in how you represent yourself in your profile.
More serious, or more casual.
You can set your profile apart by having a “cute” photo.
Especially if you are a strong-looking guy.
The most cliche (but effective)? Puppies.
If you have a puppy or know one that you could take a picture with…
That will get you more right swipes than anything else, assuming the dog is cute.
Any animal photos with you in them is a plus because it demonstrates that you are trustworthy.
Lock Down Your Eye Contact
Smile and look directly at the camera.
This tells a woman the most important thing she needs to know about you:
That you’re not dangerous.
Believe it or not, that’s subconsciously the first thing a woman needs to know to move forward with you.
If there’s even a doubt in her mind that she can’t trust you…
She’ll swipe left faster than a second thought.
Moral of the story, smile, smile, smile.
And maintain that direct eye contact in your photos!
Why Headshots are Important
You also want to use a cropped headshot for the main profile photo.
So when she swipes right, and you advance into the message section:
She can still see what you look like in a thumbnail photo.
A few other important notes, AVOID:
Wearing sunglasses
Crossing your arms
Making serious faces
Taking shirtless Tinder selfies in the bathroom
It’s all about high-quality photos for online dating.
People are not going to be impressed if the image:
Is pixelated.
You have red eyes.
Or you are in the middle of a group of twenty on a night out.
Think Instagram standards!
If you look like you don’t put any effort into your dating profile:
Then people will jump to the conclusion that the same level of commitment will go into your real dating life.
Set it up, so the best of you are on show.
Somewhere with beautiful lighting
Against an arty backdrop
While you are wearing your feel-good outfit
And remember, even if the background is impressive…
(The pyramids of Egypt standards) but you are not looking as good as you usually do:
Then do not use it!
This photo should shout:
“life is good, but it would be even better if you (the person looking at the photo) were in it with me.”
An honest face shot mixed with a variance of 'fun' photos is a great idea.
Make sure your personality is honest by setting expectations through your photos.
It also depends on the lifestyle you’re trying to portray.
Hiring a photographer is not completely necessary:
But using one can make your photos consistent and deliver the message you want to convey.
If you decide to take your own photos, you can use any old camera, really.
As long as you pay attention to photographic rules.
(Also, you can read our cameras for Tinder guide, here.)
Either way, the goal here is to make sure your photos attract the right type of girl.
Backgrounds at the beach, pier, or outdoors will “sell you” as a type of guy.
And if you’re trying to attract sporty types of girls, this will be effective.
Taking fun photos is ideal; after all, this is a dating app and not LinkedIn.
It’s okay to look polished and wearing some of your better clothes.
But make sure it's what you look like in real life.
It's also okay to hire a professional or ask a friend who has a knack for photography.
Remember: You only have to do it once!
Include one (preferably 2-3) full-length body shots.
The more honest you are upfront, the less time wasted for everyone involved.
It also says a lot about your confidence to not “hide” behind obscured images of yourself.
Recent photos are imperative for starting on the right foot when you meet someone new.
If you want to mention when the photos were taken, that can ease doubts for a potential Tinder match, too.

Bad Photos to Avoid
Be judicious when uploading photos with your pets.
Many animal lovers are looking for animal lovers.
But posting too many pictures with your pets…
Or worse…
Pictures of just your pets can also feel excessive to someone who doesn't know you.
Whatever you do: avoid selfies.
Zirby has extensively reported on guys’ selfies on Tinder.
So I'll leave no selfies as an obvious no unless you know what you’re doing.
Photos for your dating profile should only be of you, so it's not confusing to someone.
…Including other people opens up the possibility they'll find your friend more attractive.
7 - The
Use a photo of you doing something that can start a conversation.
For example: maybe you are reading an interesting book or taking part in unusual activity.
The more “unique” it is, the more intrigued other singles will be.
You want your hook to make your match curious enough to message you.
#2 - Add a Border
Add a border.
If you edit your main image is a photo tool such as Canva, you can add a frame or border.
Don't make it too thick or it may get rejected, but a thin frame will make you stand out from the competition.
#3 - Use props
Women love guys holding puppies, kittens, or even babies.
It makes you look more lovable and also helps start a chat. However, if you don't have access to them then think of a fun alternative.
Maybe a cake that you've baked or a photo of you mixing brightly colored cocktails.
You want a prop that can draw the eyes and attention of the girl swiping.
So she stops to see you.
Most women are swiping through an endless sea of earth tones.
Having some bright colors can buy you an extra second or two.
I’ve already written about how to take great photos for your Tinder profile.
Which is part of my comprehensive Tinder guide, here.
But with every new Tinder update, we get closer and closer to using Video in profiles.
While Tinder Loops has been out for some time…
It hasn’t been maximized for guys.
It’s too short, so you can only really use it for selfies.
But I have a secret method of using Tinder Loops in a way that gets results.
In fact:
My current Tinder profile uses a Tinder Loop video in place of a photo for my 1st photo!
And it’s been working well.
So here’s my method for using Tinder Loops as a guy:
Don’t make the video a selfie.
Don’t make “faces” in the video; be smiling and warm.
Try to go for a Candid video.
Make sure that the video is UNIQUE or interesting.
So, how do you get a video that meets these qualifications?
It can be hard if you don’t have a camera crew.
Or is it?
All you need is Airbnb.
You can use Airbnb to book experiences.
All major cities have them.
Sign up for a cooking class or an outdoor event.
The person holding the Airbnb wants to take photos and video to share the experience on the platform.
But this video works perfectly for your Tinder loops.
While I was in Tokyo, I took an Udon-making course.
And the host photographed me rolling and cutting the Udon.
The video from it is now my Tinder loops, and it hits all the checkmarks.
It shows my personality and interests (cooking.)
It’s candid and fun. Women can see how great of a time I was having.
They had their camera, so I didn’t even need to bring one.
And most importantly, to give me an opening line to use - inviting them to my place to cook Udon together.
By following this simple guide, you’ll be able to unlock the raw power of Tinder Loops.
Editing Your Photos for an Extra Boost
Last up, you need to edit your photos.
There’s no question about this.
A professional photographer would never in a million years put out images of their clients that weren’t edited.
I’m saying this from first hand experience.
Not only have I worked for years as a professional photographer, but I also have a bachelors and masters degree in photography.
The problem is editing your photos is a delicate art…
Poor editing will make you look worse, fake, or cheesy.
And frankly, takes a lot of experience and expensive software.
To mitigate this, I created a free to download photo editing tutorial video.
That breaks down exactly how to edit your photos to get more matches — using just your phone.
This means you can improve your Tinder photos in literal minutes without having to take new photos.
To check out my video, just click “watch now” below.
And don’t worry, it’s free to watch.

You’ve made the decision to try online dating and it’s time to start creating your profile. When you start building your dating profile, you’ll notice some space for a “headline.” The headline section of your dating profile is similar to the title in a news article or blog post. Think about the posts that stand out to you when you’re scrolling through Facebook or Twitter. The posts with the most intriguing headlines are likely the ones you’ll click on and read. Online dating works in a similar fashion.
When it comes to your dating profile, your headline is likely the first thing someone will read on your profile. That being said, if you want to find your perfect match, you want to create a statement that is eye-catching. Think of it as the first impression for showcasing your personality – your headline (combined with an interest in your photo) will be the first glimpses of your personality that make someone want to connect with you.
Need some help creating a good headline for a dating site? We’ve put together a list of some of the best headlines online dating users are finding success with and give you some useful tips to bear in mind.
“YOU’LL NEVER BELIEVE WHY I MOVED TO ___.”
Fill in the blank with your current location and you’ve got yourself a pretty intriguing headline. This is a great statement to use if you recently moved to a new city because it immediately opens up the conversation. This dating profile headline tells users you’re new in town, or have a good story to tell. Plus, it creates a bit of mystery about you and the people who want to know more about you will reach out!
“SEEKING SOMEONE TO DO ___ WITH.”
This is a great headline for your dating profile because it tells people what you are looking for and the type of person you want to spend your time with. If you’re looking for a relationship, you can say “seeking a partner to do ___ with” or simply say “seeking a friend to have coffee with” if you’re only using the site for friendship. By adding an activity, you’re immediately mentioning one of your hobbies which will be eye catching to someone with shared interests. Plus, if things go well, you’ve already got a first date idea!
“WILLING TO LIE ABOUT HOW WE MET.”
If you can come up with a funny online dating headline, you should use it in your profile. International research by eharmony UK found that both men and women are more likely to be attracted to people who describe themselves as funny. Not everyone will laugh at your jokes, but the ones who do are bound to get in touch with you! If you can make someone laugh, you’ve already made a good first impression, so a silly formulation could turn out to be the smart move.
“I AM SWEET, AMBITIOUS AND THOUGHTFUL.”
Which Dating Site To Use
If you want the absolute best dating profile headline, use these three words to describe your attributes (if they are true, that is). Why? Well, when eharmony U.K. analyzed over 12,000 profiles in 2014, they discovered that female profiles that included the words “sweet, ambitious and thoughtful,” saw between 20 to 45 percent more approaches. For men, the three most attractive words you can use to describe yourself are: physically fit, ambitious, and perceptive.
“I SOLEMNLY SWEAR THAT I AM UP TO NO GOOD.”
Don’t be shy – get a little creative with your headline! Use a quote or song lyric from one of your favorite books (like this Harry Potter reference) or bands and you’re bound to get a response from someone who catches and loves the reference. Creative dating profile headlines are always eye catching and the right person will appreciate the effort!
“LOOKING FOR MY NETFLIX & CHILL.”
This can work as both a bold or funny dating profile headline. If you’re just looking for a fling or something with no strings attached, this is a fun, easy way to put it out there. Who knows, maybe enjoying each other’s company while watching TV will turn into more than you set out for! This phrase has become a part of our modern culture, so it’s a pretty fun (albeit obvious) one to use for your dating profile. But, you could earn bonus points if you say what TV show you want to binge watch – that way you find someone who has similar interests!
“I HAVE AN MBA, LOVE TACOS, AND AM LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO PLAY VIDEO GAMES WITH.”
A recent study conducted by scientists from Barts, the London School of Medicine, and The University of North Texas, discovered that the best ratio for online dating profile headlines is to include a 70:30 ratio of what you are like to what you want. Plus, by using your headline to reveal some pieces about yourself, you’ll draw the attention of the type of person you’re looking for.
